These questions inspire the research in the Nelson lab. In particular, we seek to understand the molecular mechanisms that function in germ cells - the cells that become sperm and eggs - to ensure the genome is protected as it is transmitted from generation to generation. Our lab uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to investigate how highly unstable, yet essential, repetitive regions of the genome are maintained over the generations.
